But first, as usual, let us briefly introduce the\u00a0whole schedule followed by the reviews written by our great editorial team.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s begin with the short films officially in competition: <strong>Futuro Prossimo<\/strong> by Salvatore Mereu is a\u00a0praiseworthy story about migration; <strong>Counterfeit Kunkoo<\/strong>, set in contemporary\u2019s India, invites us to meditate\u00a0on the role of women nowadays; <strong>Poisson de Mars<\/strong> gives us a different version of April\u2019s fool whereas <strong>Gros\u00a0Chagrin<\/strong> brings us face to face with a love story which came to an end. <strong>Kali<\/strong> by David Krippendorff (this is his\u00a0third time at Concorto Film Festival) is a short film inspired by the song <em>Pirate Jenny<\/em> performed by a\u00a0legendary Nina Simone; the Swedish short film <strong>Min B\u00f6rda<\/strong> delights us with a bizarre bestiary dealing with\u00a0solitude and <strong>Ato San Nen<\/strong> &#8211; with its bitter-sweet comedy between the East and the West &#8211; rings down the\u00a0curtain on the first night of the festival.<br \/>\nAt 11.45pm, the <strong>Deep Night<\/strong> &#8211; the first night dedicated to scary movies &#8211; will take place at the Greenhouse!\u00a0Find all the <a href=\"http:\/\/asinovolablog.it\/en\/deep-night-recensioni-2018\/\">reviews<\/a> here. So, here is a man, locking a beach cabina and accidentally interfering with the life of a woman run away from the immigrant reception center. With her is a child, which she adopted when her parents died, while crossing the sea with a boat. The two protagonist\u2019s longing for normality, both in real life and fiction, is hindered by the lack of work during the day and the need of a shelter and a home by night. This is the pursuit of happiness of the invisibles. In these 16 minutes, two lives stand for thousands.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;20&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h5><span style=\"color: #f1564f;\">Counterfeit Kunkoo &#8211; Reema Sengupta<br \/>\n<em>As seen by Elena Saltarelli<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>This 15-minute short film recounts the odyssey of an Indian woman who\u2019s looking for a place on\u00a0lease to live in.\u00a0Being unmarried represents a burden within the Indian society since no one wants to rent a house\u00a0to a single woman. After having escaped a life of violence, the female protagonist finds in social\u00a0violence an even bigger hurdle.<br \/>\nThe hardships and the scrambling in search for her own individuality are rendered through close-ups and dynamic editing that create a pounding and cynical product, recalling the doors slammed\u00a0in the protagonist\u2019s face and the superficiality she constantly faces.\u00a0This work successfully outlines a deep social and cultural lack without falling into rhetoric and\u00a0pietism but reporting the fact simply by describing it.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;20&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h5><span style=\"color: #f1564f;\">Poisson de Mars &#8211; Pierre-Marc Drouin<br \/>\n<em>As seen by Elena Saltarelli<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>This 14-minutes short film talks &#8211; with dark comedy traits &#8211; about a family dinner for the 39th\u00a0birthday of one of Louis\u2019 brothers, a man who suffers from depression.\u00a0The key to everything is the April fools made up by the family for the poor man, who is inconsolable\u00a0and full of rage because of the breakup with his girlfriend.\u00a0The strength of this work undoubtedly lies in the clean picture and in the dialogs that enhance the<br \/>\nFrench irony even in front of distressing events.\u00a0The tragicomic turn makes the vision irresistible and confirms the ruthless beauty of this genre and\u00a0the human need to laugh where one should cry.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;20&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h5><span style=\"color: #f1564f;\">Gros Chagrin &#8211; C\u00e9line Devaux<br \/>\n<em>As seen by Carlotta Magistris<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><em>Gros Chagrin<\/em> &#8211; which was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in the short\u00a0films section &#8211; is a stream of consciousness about the end of a love story celebrated in all its\u00a0imperfections and contradictions. Celine Deviaux, who is mainly an animation film director,\u00a0successfully pictures the two protagonists witnessing their own love-nest falling apart\u00a0through an animation which seems to fathom their thoughts, creating vivid metaphorical\u00a0images of their moods which cannot be put into words. The result is a mosaic of a shallow\u00a0inwardness trying to put the pieces back together and a tribute to what French cinema\u00a0represents in terms of topic, colors and faces.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;20&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h5><span style=\"color: #f1564f;\">Kali \u2013 David Krippendorff<br \/>\n<em>As seen by Yorgos Kostianis<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>In 1964, legendary songstress and civil rights activist, Nina Simone performed a powerful cover of the haunting song <em>Pirate Jenny<\/em> from the first act of Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill\u2019s musical: The Threepenny Opera.<br \/>\n5 decades later the song\u2019s soul-stirring lyrics remain ever relevant, inspiring Krippendorff to adapt them into a scathing monologue, masterfully delivered by his muse, Hiam Abbass (<em>Blade Runner 2049<\/em>) in a barnstorming performance.<br \/>\nThe film\u2019s title alludes to Hindu goddess Kali \u2013 deity of empowerment and liberation but also vengeful castigator of evil \u2013 thus reflecting the film\u2019s glaring undertones of injustice and oppression.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;20&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h5><span style=\"color: #f1564f;\">Min B\u00f6rda &#8211; Niki Lindroth von Bahr<br \/>\n<em>As seen by Margherita Fontana<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>A 24-hour supermarket, a call centre, a fast food restaurant and a hotel for lonely\u00a0hearts. In the middle of the night, an anthropomorphic bestiary puts on a weird\u00a0musical about solitude and vain hopes of our daily life. With its strange and somehow\u00a0unsettling animation, <em>Min B\u00f6rda<\/em> (<em>The Burden<\/em>) strikes for its sharp irony that turns into\u00a0poetry. The environments of this little universe featured in this short film end up\u00a0being mirrored by the immense starry sky and the burden of life returns to be\u00a0insignificant while we, small critters, seek to find the courage to carry on. The<br \/>\napocalypse is near but it\u2019s far from being feared.\u00a0It is no surprise that this sophisticated short film by the Swedish visual artist Niki<br \/>\nLindroth von Bahr has won &#8211; since its premi\u00e8re &#8211; more than 25 awards, including the\u00a0Cristal for the best short film at Annecy\u2019s International Animated Film Festival in 2017.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;20&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h5><span style=\"color: #f1564f;\">Ato San Nen &#8211; Pedro Collantes<br \/>\n<em>As seen by Margherita Fontana<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><em>Ato San Nen<\/em> by Pedro Collantes shows the unusual encounter between the Spanish lady Marisa\u00a0and the Japanese Hiroshi, an awkward tourist. Even if they are completely at odds, they both\u00a0know well how it feels to be alone: she is a widow whose only company is her dog Tico, whereas<br \/>\nhe is married to a woman who is currently in prison (and will be for three more years, ato san nen\u00a0in Japanese). The fear to be left alone makes them be foolish and take risks and, at the same time,\u00a0fans their desire to communicate their inner feelings, breaking linguistic and cultural barriers. Who\u00a0said that it is impossible to open up to a complete stranger and to find intimacy, even in a\u00a0language she or he cannot understand?
