\nHowever, let\u2019s focus on today: we will begin at 6pm with WABI SABI Focus Japan<\/strong> at Palazzo Ghizzoni Nasalli (here the reviews<\/a>).\u00a0Come enjoy these gems of Japanese cinema, you won\u2019t regret it!\u00a0Tonight\u2019s screenings at Parco Raggio will begin with Hector Malot: the last day of the year<\/strong>, winner of the\u00a0Semaine de la Critique at Cannes 2018, and with La giornata, a short documentary on a tragic Italian news\u00a0item. Sch\u00e4cher<\/strong> is a little treasure which invites us to meditate on life and death while Sog<\/strong> is an animation\u00a0short film where strange creatures seem to oppose a long-forgotten beauty. Damiana<\/strong> takes us to the heart\u00a0of Brazil and Negative Space analyzes a tender father-and-son relationship. We\u2019ll finish on a high note with\u00a0Sex at the Ski Centre<\/strong> \u2013 the title itself is rather allusive \u2013 and Vihta<\/strong>, an amazing Belgian short film which will\u00a0entertain you and make you smile.\u00a0At 11.30pm, in the Greenhouse we\u2019ll screen the third part of the focus Mirrors<\/strong> dedicated to gender issues (reviews<\/a> here) while in the Boschetto at 11.15pm don\u2019t miss the Bleech Festival Warmup<\/strong> with ALO<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Hector Malot: the last day of the year – Jacqueline Lentzou
\nVisto da Carlotta Magistris<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n

Hector Malot<\/em>, presented at the last Festival de Cannes, is a delicate short film about the last\u00a0day of the year of a young girl facing family and emotional dramas, for which words never\u00a0seem to be enough. The personal direction of the Greek Jacqueline Lentzou, almost entirely
\nrealized with a hand camera and full of close-ups, creates a strong empathy with the\u00a0protagonist. The viewer feels distant from the reality surrounding the protagonist which\u00a0seems to be ages far from her own mental universe yet it\u2019s still part of her inner world. A\u00a0world made of long moments of silence, missed phone calls and an everlasting solitude filled\u00a0with music from her headphones in a church.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

La giornata – Pippo Mezzapesa
\nas seen by Sofia Brugali<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n

La giornata<\/em> is an intense cinematographic memorial dedicated \u201cto Paola Clemente. Died from\u00a0fatigue for a few euros on 13 July 2015\u201d, that report the institution of illegal employment and labourers\u2019\u00a0exploitaition in the agricultural sector, an issue sadly known throughout Italy. Pippo\u00a0 Mezzapesa deals with\u00a0the matter with great dignity and no rhetoric: the images don\u2019t focus on the backbreaking work, but show\u00a0the bus ride to the fields, while the charachters are already aware of the situation, they are witnesses. The\u00a0dialogues are taken from the records of the trial, which started because of the complaint of her husband,\u00a0and they target directly the spectator, describing what happened. Paola doesn\u2019t speak, she\u2019s unaware,\u00a0alienated just like the spectator who finds out her story word after word.\u00a0At the end of the short film there\u2019s a symbolic torchlight procession: it is the homage that Paola has never\u00a0had in real life.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

Sch\u00e4cher – Flurin Giger

In a windy night, a thief breaks in through the window of the house of a elderly couple; the morning after,\u00a0the husband finds his significant other slumped to the kitchen\u2019s floor, lifeless. Left alone, he decides to take\u00a0his own life \u2013 \u201cI have one last request: I would like to lie by my wife\u2019s side\u201d. The sacredness of this choice,\u00a0as of the whole story, is emphasised not only by the mood of the movie and the background music, but also\u00a0by the title of the short film: \u201cSch\u00e4cher\u201d, thief, is a biblical term. In the official selection of the Cannes Film\u00a0Festival, Flurin Giger\u2019s work deals with the subject of death and the endless bond which is created in it in a\u00a0completely original way, backed up by Ernst Jacobi\u2019s poignant performance.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

Sog – Jonatan Schwenk

After a disastrous flood a school of fish drift away and get stuck on old trees. The drier they get, the louder their harrowing screams get, waking up the local cave dwellers who don\u2019t take too kindly to their intrusion.
\nDirected and animated by Jonathan Schwenk, Sog<\/em> is a hybrid animation featuring no dialogue but with strong metaphoric undertones alluding to the migrant crisis and on how people deal with strangers.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

Damiana \u2013 Andr\u00e9s Pulido

Damiana<\/em> was born from the personal experience of the author and from his will to show a thorny glimpse\u00a0of South America: the camera catches the life of a group of girls confined in the wet scorching heat of the\u00a0Amazon rainforest, kept away from degrading and disadvantaged situations, from absent families and\u00a0indifferent (as well as male-dominated) communities. In a kind of matriarchal leadership, a strong but rude\u00a0woman acts as their leader and mother and teaches them the difficult path toward their growth and the\u00a0journey to find themselves through prayer, work and dialogue. The emphasis of the images is focused on\u00a0the growing bodies of these teenagers, often entwined, which sweat their demons and the torment of their\u00a0difficult past. This is the reason why Damiana even goes so far cutting herself in an attempt to express and\u00a0maybe exorcise her agony by sealing it on her skin.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

Negative Space \u2013 Max Porter + Ru Kuwahata

This sweet French short film analyzes the relationship between a father and his son\u00a0through what they used to do together, namely packing the suitcase.\u00a0The stop-motion animation retraces their orderly way to love each other, folding shirts and rolling\u00a0up socks to save as much space as possible.\u00a0This rite was repeated whenever the father was away on business, and the son packed the\u00a0suitcase for him making the most of his advice.\u00a0And that\u2019s how, in front of the father\u2019s coffin, all the love and the sorrow condense in a short,\u00a0simple phrase: \u201cLook at all that wasted space.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

Sex at the Ski Center \u2013 Heikki Ahola

A surreal comedy or nothing more than a simple divertissement? It\u2019s hard to find the right\u00a0words to define Sex at the Ski Center<\/em> by the Finnish Heikki Ahola. What is certain is that one\u00a0needs a fervid imagination and an uncommon sense of humour to conceive this voyeuristic\u00a0fantasy set in the gelid Scandinavian winter. Vihta \u2013 Fran\u00e7ois Bierry
\nVisto da Elena Saltarelli<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n

Vihta<\/em>, a 21-minute long comedy directed by the Belgian director Fran\u00e7ois Bierry, is the most radical\u00a0example of what it means to refuse to submit to your boss.\u00a0A small group of colleagues is invited to spend a day in a SPA by the owner of a multinational that\u00a0has just incorporated the little tractors\u2019 company they work for.\u00a0In an awkward naturist environment, they immediately start an inner fight on how to capture his\u00a0favor.
\nA little masterpiece of the Belgian comedy, with an excellent mixture of dialog and photography\u00a0perfected and balanced with scientific precision.
\nThe short film gained an honorable mention for the editing and the filmic rhythm that manage to\u00a0create a hilarious yet not superficial product.
\nCapitalizing on both filled and void cinematographic space and time, this short film is a high-quality\u00a0product that isn\u2019t affected by the lengthy minute count; as the protagonist Serge would say: \u201cTime\u00a0flies when you\u2019re having fun\u201d.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
