S<\/span><\/strong>hortcuts get a bad rap. The shortest routes have been historically frowned upon as a means to anywhere worth going. That being said, considering the dystopian hellscape we\u2019ve all been going through as of late, our film programmers, Yorgos and Vanessa, thought an easy way out might be just what we need right now.<\/p>\n

While working on the new edition of Concorto Film Festival, they couldn\u2019t help but notice that one of the harshest realities our sector is called to face is that of being kept apart from the proverbial cogs that keep the industry in motion: directors, actors, producers, distributors and all those individuals that work both in front and behind the scenes.
\nIn this regard, they came up with a project, or rather a sort of communicative bridge, that could rekindle intimate dialogues between our festival and its collaborators.<\/p>\n

Since the path towards in-person interviews is not yet paved, they decided to name their project Shortcut<\/strong> \u2013 as in a workaround to hold brief, yet heartfelt interviews on short films featuring its main proponents.
\nMuch like each of the interviewees has left his\/her mark on our festival, we interrogated them on the short films that, in one way or another, left a mark on them.
\nShorts that will be available for you to watch online, like a daydream in-between zoom meetings or a refuge during your quarantine insomnia.<\/p>\n

So, cast aside your misconceptions on shorts or shortcuts, and let us show you that no matter the distance or the duration, we\u2019re always connected through cinema.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”Small Line” line_alignment=”default” line_thickness=”2″ divider_color=”accent-color”][vc_column_text]\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shortcut opens<\/strong> without going too far from home: the first director we interviewed is Carlo Sironi<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recognised on the national and international scene especially with the last film <\/span>Sole <\/i><\/b>(Best European Revelation 2020 at the EFA 2020), Carlo Sironi was our guest in 2017, when he won the Asino d’Oro with his fourth short film Valparaiso<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>Carlo Sironi made an insightful selection for us by choosing from works available online: he specifies, however, that without this limit his choices would be a little bit different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1 – If you\u2019d have to present yourself with solely one of your films, which one would you choose?

\u2013<\/b> Sofia<\/b><\/a> by Carlo Sironi<\/span><\/p>\n

I would choose <\/span>Sofia, <\/b>my very first short film. By following the afternoon of a teenage girl, I try to recreate a sensation that I once had. Adolescence is a long afternoon with neither morning nor evening. It\u2019s the first thing I ever shot and it\u2019s marred by errors and naivete, yet I think it\u2019s the one that I love the most.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

2 – A short film you\u2019d put in a time capsule for future generations to watch.<\/span><\/h5>\n

\u2013<\/b> Saute ma ville<\/i><\/b><\/a> by Chantal Akerman – 1968<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s incredible, it\u2019s the first thing that Chantal Akerman ever shot and the whole conception of her cinematography is encapsulated in these 12 minutes.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FwP-jQJj0Ms” el_width=”80″][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

3 – Your go-to film for when you get the blues.

\u2013<\/span> Notes on Circus<\/i><\/b><\/a> by Jonas Mekas – <\/span>1966<\/span><\/p>\n

Pure genius. It\u2019s shot with an accelerated synchro shutter and there\u2019s no editing whatsoever (amazing) which means that what you\u2019re bound to watch is a reel of film that\u2019s simply and solely developed (insane); it\u2019s funny and beautiful and still makes my heart flutter every time I watch it.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=It6Othlg-zI&ab_channel=ExperimentalMovies” el_width=”80″][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

4 – A psychotropic animation that sends you down the rabbit hole.

\u2013 <\/span>Tango<\/i><\/b><\/a> by Zbigniew Rybczy\u0144ski – 1981<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m a fan of Tango. I discovered this short quite recently but I\u2019ve already watched it dozens of times. The distinct sonority of that tango blended with the imagery gives me the chills and makes me laugh at the same time.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lo8O8lYDzIU&ab_channel=auf23″ el_width=”80″][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

5 – A short film that you consider a hallmark in short film history.

\u2013 <\/span>Wasp<\/i><\/b><\/a> by Andrea Arnold – 2003<\/span><\/p>\n

This one was a milestone for my generation: the acting, the visual language. While being completely archetypal of the New British Cinema tradition there\u2019s also something radical about it.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https:\/\/youtu.be\/5VEwcAAJ-LE” el_width=”80″][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

6 – A short film that left you gawking speechlessly at the screen.

\u2013 <\/span>Las manos Limpias<\/i><\/b><\/a> by Carlos Armellas – 2012<\/span><\/p>\n

While I was competing in Venice with my short film <\/span>Cargo<\/i><\/b>, in the same slot there was the screening of this masterpiece. To me, it\u2019s exactly what a short film should be: solemn, radical and mesmerizing. <\/span>
\n<\/span>Unfortunately it didn\u2019t win.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

7 – A short film that gets you in the mood.
\n<\/span><\/h5>\n

\u2013 <\/span>Out of Frame<\/i><\/b><\/a> by Yorgos Zois – 2012<\/span><\/p>\n

8 – What\u2019s your fondest memory of Concorto?

My fondest memory lies in the perfect balance between the huge audience turnout (both in terms of numbers and enthusiasm), the incredible quality of the selection of films, and the masterclass.
