S<\/span><\/strong>hortcut <\/b>is the new format of Asino Vola blog dedicated to short works: a <\/span>carte <\/span><\/i>that is not <\/span>blanche <\/span><\/i>at all for the directors of the past Concorto’s editions. Seems like a life ago from the last edition – the moonlight, the smell of hand sanitizers – but most of the public will remember<\/span> Clean with me (after dark)<\/span><\/i><\/a>, desktop documentary winner of the Young Jury’s prize: Shortcut number 3 will explore the cinematic vision of Gabrielle Stemmer.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”Small Line” line_alignment=”default” line_thickness=”2″ divider_color=”accent-color”][vc_column_text]\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

After a master\u2019s degree in literature, <\/span>Gabrielle Stemmer<\/b> studied the art of editing at La F\u00e9mis. During her schooling, she directed<\/span> Doug’s Theory<\/span><\/i>, a false fragment of a real documentary, and <\/span>Clean With Me (After Dark)<\/span><\/i>, her graduation film. In addition to her work as an editor, Gabrielle focuses her personal projects on internet archives, the theme of misleading images and the question of the female model. Oscillating between documentary and fiction, she also directed <\/span>Nullipara<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Bolly Coco IRL<\/span><\/i> and<\/span> Women on Tik Tok<\/span><\/i><\/a>.<\/span><\/i>

\u2013 <\/b>Clean With Me (After Dark)<\/span><\/i><\/a> by <\/span><\/i>Gabrielle Stemmer – 2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Clean With Me (After Dark),<\/span><\/i><\/a> my graduation project at La f\u00e9mis. I made this film out of my unsettling passion for cleaning videos on YouTube. The original impulse was: why the hell am I looking at them? Which led me to the next question: who makes them and why? This film is very important to me, it made me tour on festivals and meet other filmmakers, it sparked a lot of debate with different audiences. And it is with this film that I started to work on both a material and a form that interested me enormously.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https:\/\/vimeo.com\/482515379″ el_width=”80″][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

2 – A short film you\u2019d put in a time capsule for future generations to watch.<\/span><\/h5>\n

\u2013 <\/i><\/b>Mat et les Gravitantes<\/i><\/a><\/strong> by Pauline P\u00e9nichout – 2019<\/span><\/p>\n

I chose Mat et les Gravitantes<\/em>, by my colleague Pauline P\u00e9nichout at La f\u00e9mis. The grain of the image, this group of intense young women, their questions, demands and revolt make you feel like you actually just opened a time-capsule from the seventies and a Carole Roussopoulos movie. But in the words of Mat and her mates, you hear the voice of nowadays struggling femininity. It’s a beautiful short – and also quite informative!<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5J27JdyJjK8″ el_width=”80″][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

3 – Your go-to film for when you get the blues.
\n<\/span><\/h5>\n

\u2013\u00a0<\/i><\/b>Semiotics in the Kitchen<\/a><\/strong> by Martha Rosler – 1975<\/span><\/p>\n

I discovered that one recently, but it’s the first that came to my mind. I love the way she approaches a real issue in a mischievous way. But my honest answer would be: when I have the blues, I just watch Friends<\/em> bloopers like everyone else.[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZuZympOIGC0″ el_width=”80″][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

4 – A psychotropic animation that sends you down the rabbit hole. <\/span><\/h5>\n

5 – A short film that you consider a hallmark in short film history.
\n<\/span><\/h5>\n

\u2013 <\/i><\/b>La Jet\u00e9e<\/a><\/strong> by Chris Marker – 1962<\/span><\/p>\n

A hallmark in cinema history \u2013 period – but I had to mention it. It’s just a masterpiece, ageless, tender and yet so dark. I have it on my phone, just the sound with no image, and I listen to it during my whereabouts. Jean N\u00e9groni\u2019s voice and Trevor Duncan\u2019s music keep me compagny in the subway or down the streets.[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fU99W-ZrIHQ&t=485s” el_width=”80″][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

6 – A short film that left you gawking speechlessly at the screen.<\/span><\/h5>\n

\u2013<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/i>E\u00fbt-elle \u00e9t\u00e9 criminelle<\/a><\/strong> by Jean-Gabriel P\u00e9riot – 2006\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m a big fan of P\u00e9riot\u2019s work. He has such a clever way to mingle with archives and mingle us with them. This short in particular, dealing with the dark side of the french Lib\u00e9ration in 1944, operates by reframing and slowing images \u2013 a process that I’m particularly sensitive to. The absence of voice over too, inspired me a lot long before I discovered the film which will be my next answer.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

7 – A short film that gets you in the mood
\n<\/span><\/h5>\n

\u2013\u00a0<\/i><\/b>Transformers\u00a0: The Premake<\/i><\/a><\/strong> by Kevin B. Lee – 2014\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That one movie makes me in the mood to create, to investigate, and to be playful in my work. It’s a mindblowing digital investigation, starting on a rather harmless point and leading you to a relentless conclusion. There is something so contagious with desktop movies : you feel like you can make your own, and that the internet is a vast territory at your complete disposal… there are no limits.[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https:\/\/vimeo.com\/94101046″ el_width=”80″][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]\n

8 – What do you miss most about film festivals?
\n<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n

What I miss most is eavesdropping on audience reactions, how they laugh or stop laughing, how they hold their breath or whisper things to each other, or even the oh so familiar sound of a phone hitting the soft carpet.
