Yes, we know, we’re already halfway through the festival. But let’s not dwell on that.
Today is another day full of events, starting with the second session of Concorto Kids—at 4:30 PM at Ricci Oddi, there’s an eco-hacking activity with tin cans and seed bombs. Afterwards, there will be a lavish snack provided by Fonte Plose and Eataly Piacenza, followed by screenings!
Meanwhile, at the Salone degli Amici dell’Arte, it’s the first day of *Industry The Summer Connection* at Concorto, featuring the talk “Not just about showing films,” followed by the second part of the *Focus Palestine* at 6 PM.
At 9 PM at Parco Raggio, the competition shorts will be screened, followed by the *Indocili* series in the greenhouse, and at 12:30 AM, the talk “Sguardi indocili. Italian cinema under 35.”
So, see you later!
PERDRE LÉNA – MATHILDE PROFIT
As seen by Carola Visca
At school, Cécile waits for the end of class to catch the bus that will take her home. At the bus stop, an unusual encounter with Léna, a mysterious girl who is being stalked by someone on the phone – perhaps a classmate – urges Cécile to return on the woman’s trail the following day. The high school girl is thus engrossed in the stranger’s story, stuck between a sense of responsibility towards a woman in trouble and resignation when faced with the inability to act. A tale of female solidarity that makes a fleeting yet significant encounter a perfectly orchestrated moment of passage to adulthood.
2720 – BASIL DA CUNHA
As seen by Chiara Ghidelli
In Reboleira, in Lisbon, there is a clandestine neighborhood left on the margins, where police raids are commonplace, creating inconvenience, clashes and violence on the streets. For Camila, a 7-year-old girl, this is the only world outside her door. Thanks to slow, long camera movements, the story of 2720, of this reality on the edges, manages to tell a culture that belongs to the city of Lisbon but also to many other cities around the world, where the suburbs, by chance and by necessity, end up building alternative centers as the only possible way. While Camila wanders the streets of this large urban town searching for her brother, Jyzone gets out of prison and finds a new job. However, along the way, his reality takes him back to a nature of aversion and rebellion as the only way to survive.
SOLEIL GRIS – CAMILLE MONNIER
As seen by Francesca Marchesini
Camille Monnier’s animated short film explores the theme of dryness, both emotional and environmental. In a gray setting and a barren landscape, bordering on a post-apocalyptic vision, the protagonists—animals and humans—of *Soleil Gris* express their frustration with a society and a world that seem unable to offer anything positive for the future.
NUESTRA SOMBRA – AGUSTINA SÁNCHEZ GAVIER
As seen by Vanessa Mangiavacca
The surreal and pending atmospheres of Argentinian contemporary cinema return to Concorto with Nuestra Sombra, the first short film directed by director Agustina Sánchez Gavier. “Our shadow” doesn’t only refer to the imminent eclipse that will obscure the Cumandai region, but also to a ghostly and mysterious aura hanging over the lives of characters that live in houses surrounded by greenery and forests, not so far from the city. The characters are Lucas and his sister Ayli, apparently gone missing, Lucy, the quiet lady Maria and Cami, forced to stay in bed due to an illness.
The Sun-Earth-Moon alignment, the soundtrack and the 16 mm grain are the narrative device that evoke a gloomy “on-the-alert” tension that persists for the whole film. The woods get destroyed and the noise of a saw can be heard all around. Invisible forces seem to demand justice: it’s prophetical nature, ready to cause imbalance and agony in the human’s soul.
ÉTÉ 2000 – VIRGINIE NOLIN, LAURENCE OLIVIER
As seen by Carola Visca
As seen by Francesca Marchesini
In her book *The Monstrous-Feminine*, essayist Jude Ellison Sady Doyle explains how the narratives that have, over the centuries, transformed women into witches, harpies, sea monsters, and daughters of Satan are—once again—the legacy and expression of a patriarchal system that, in order to best subjugate women, must even demonize them. Marinthia Gutiérrez’s short film explores this very association between the monster, the vampire, and the independent woman, expanding the discussion to the complexities of internalized misogyny. To do so, she adopts an innovative language, blending video dance, B-movie horror, and amateur film, enriching the scene with a magical and evocative aura.
COMPLICATIONS – IVAR AASE
As seen by Carola Visca
Ivar Aase’s short film is a story of friendship and careset in the highly stigmatised context of sex work. Lotte is a student who works as an online dominatrix to support herself, while Arne is a middle-aged man and a loyal customer of hers. During a webcam session the man feels ill and the only one who can help him is Lotte, who promptly calls for help on the other side of the screen. Complications breaks free from prejudices towards unconventional sexual practices, demonstrating with drama and irony that there are infinite forms of affection and understanding between people.
